Splits, Swarms, and Spring

How We Went from Two Hives to Four (with a whole lot of juggling!)

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from keeping bees, it’s this: God’s creation is wildly resilient — and just as wild in behavior.

At the start of spring, we had two hives. Then… everything changed.

One of our hives lost its queen — never a good sign — so we transferred in some queen cells from the other colony and hoped for the best. Within weeks, not only had that hive bounced back, but both original hives were booming with activity.

In fact, they were growing so fast that we needed to split them before they swarmed. So, we did — and created a third hive.

Naturally, the bees swarmed anyway (because bees will do what bees will do). But by God’s grace, we caught the swarm! We set up a fourth hive and settled everyone in.

For a minute, it looked like that last swarm was queenless. We moved in more queen cells — and now all four hives are thriving.

Four hives. One spring. And a whole lot of buzzing. 🐝

We’re heading into summer with pollinators aplenty and the sweet smell of clover in the air. These little creatures remind us daily that life doesn’t always go as planned, but it sure can be beautiful when it works out.

Stay tuned — we’ll be harvesting honey before we know it.
